Do you have a pain in your neck? What is causing it?

No this is not about that person who is annoying you, but the serious issue of aches and pains in the neck and shoulder area. What causes them and why?

Some of the more common causes are:

  • Sleeping in wrong position. Often referred to as a “crick” in the neck, a person might wake up in the morning with neck pain due to sleeping in an awkward position for them.
  • Sports injury. A person could move the neck suddenly and/or in an unusual way in a new sport, or a player could have a collision or fall. A common sports collision injury is when fascia and nerves in the neck/shoulder are impacted and pain, numbness, and weakness can radiate down through the shoulder to the hand.
  • Poor posture. Whether we are poor posture can lead to neck problems. If our head is often tilted forward for long periods of time, then the neck’s fascia, muscles, tendons, and ligaments need to work harder. Poor posture can be problematic during any number of activities, including working at a computer, watching TV, riding the train, reading a book, gardening, and more.
  • Repetitive motions. Turning the head in a repetitive manner, such as side to side while dancing or swimming, may lead to overuse of the neck’s fascia, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
  • Holding the head in unusual position. Anything that requires holding the head in an unusual way for long periods of time could cause neck strains and sprains.
  • Whiplash. In a whiplash injury, the head and neck are forced suddenly forward and immediately backward with a great deal of force straining the fascia.

With the exception of whiplash all of these occur when the fascia that wraps all of the muscles and is the connective tissue, is required to undertake actions outside of their normal function. We have all experienced perhaps when we decorate and paint a ceiling, afterwards our shoulders, neck and arm ache. There is one group of people who would not experience that stiffness. Who would they be? Decorators, as the motion of painting is something they do so often that their fascia is used to that function.
